The
Big Boys

So what do we know about
them? They’ve been called the largest steam engine ever built but in actuality,
they were not. Several other locomotives were larger, some longer, some with
more drivers. But what sets the Big Boys apart in the “big’ category was the
fact that they were considered the most successful locomotives ever built.
Unlike other classes of locomotives, some of which were built in the thousands,
only 25 were ever built. They were built in two groups, the first group called
Class 1’s (20) were started in 1941 and averaged over a million miles of
service each. The second group called Class 2’s (5) were built in 1944 and
because they were not in service as long as the Class 1’s rolled up less miles,
the highest of which was 811,956 miles. Most Big Boys were retired in 1961 with
the last one retired in July of 1962. Four were still operational as late as
September of 1962. Altho’ they weren’t intended to run at high speeds, the Big Boys
were designed for stability to run at 80 miles mph. Unlike their predecessors,
the 4-6-6-4 Challengers, the Big Boys were not successful at being converted to oil burners and remained coal
burners through to their retirement. The Big Boys weigh in at 1,208,750lbs and
are approximately 133 feet in length. Only 8 of the 25 exist and are on display

Hey, why don’t we go in and harass the guys!

OK. Let’s do the

Minutes: January 31, 2009
Minutes
of last meeting approved as written. There was no treasurer’s report as the
Treasurer was unable to attend.
*Donny read a letter from
*Joe Salamon reported that Channel 6 sent a
cameraman out to film the layout that was shown approximately 4:30 p.m. However, it was only on for about 12 seconds
and stated that the Tulsa Garden Railroad Club set-up and decorated for all
kinds of seasons. Joe recorded the 12
seconds and it is on the web site along with pictures that he took.
*Bob Gardine stated that he told the staff of the
hospital that we would give them first choice for our set-up for next
year. The set-up was up for a
week-and-a- half.
*Discussion continued and it is felt that we need
to start working on securing a place for the Christmas lay-out as early as
October. Donny stated that we need to
make a DVD of some of the member’s lay-outs and some of our displays at the
various shows (about 5 sets each)
*Barbara Shirey would like to see the women more
involved in the Christmas show by perhaps including small gift bags for each
child. They could include small,
inexpensive things such as pencils, etc.
This could be a community service project.
*Donnie reported that we need to do our very best
decorating job at the Bentonville show to include a few shots of member’s
layouts for DVD to show what our group is all about. This is also necessary for the upcoming
We are looking for a place to hold our meetings as
we no longer are able to use the church that we were using. It was suggested that we hold meetings in
members’ homes. We could make a day of it and for operating sessions. This could get more people involved. Perhaps hold meetings in members’ homes six
times a year from May through October, and find a place for the months November
through April. We could also hold
workshops about four times a year. There
was much discussions on possibilities A
motion was made, seconded and passed that we have a committee headed by Harry
Wolohon to seek a place for the November-April meetings. He will contact
*We approved the purchase of wood needed for the
trailer in the amount of $95.00. Barbara
Shirey stated that we need a bolt of green fabric for skirting, Velcro tape,
green carpet, a small tool box, 50 sets of clips for modules and ground track
and clamp type joiners for modules.
Motion made, seconded and passed.
