Greetings from the President’s Roundhouse

Text Box: This space for rent (cheap) or will trade for train related information or articles….
At the time that this letter is being written, I am sitting in Wichita, Kansas, with the outside temperature just at 42 degrees and a slow, cold rain is falling. Which made me think again about what people do to their outdoor railroad to get it ready to “hibernate” for the winter. How many of you start to tear down your railroad in a sense of bringing in the building and other structures, and what do you do to the plants and landscaping to prepare for the winter harshness? This would be a good subject for some discussion during our next club meeting. Anybody with ideas would be welcome to talk about what should be done to help protect your investment. Also, does anyone (probably everyone) still run some sessions during the cold. I know that if a good snow comes along, some people like to see the trains running and plowing snow.

Its hard to believe that the holiday season will be here before you know it… Remember, Christmas party coming up soon.

Until the meeting….Donnie

TGRRC Minutes:  August 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Donnie Shirey.  The Minutes were approved as published.  The Treasurer’s Report was given.

Old Business

Tour signs -- Donnie again asked that tour hosts let him know how many tour signs they have, so we can try to track down our TGRRC tour signs.  Originally, we had 50.  Currently, we have fewer than 20.

Zoolightful -- Joe reported that the Tulsa Zoo no longer hosts the Zoolightful event, so we will not be setting up at the zoo in December.

Bixby show – Set up for the Bixby train show will be Friday Oct 3.  Volunteers for set-up are:  Mike, Sky, Joe, Harry and Bill.  Volunteers to work the event on Saturday Oct 4 are:  Bob G., Mike, Joe, Sky, Vern and Vernon.

Ground track trailer – We have located a small trailer for the ground track.  Size: 8 ft x 5 ft.  Cost: $650.  We will borrow the trailer on Saturday Oct 4 for tear-down at the Bixby show.  At that time, we will evaluate the condition and size to determine whether the club should purchase the trailer for storing and hauling ground track.  It comes with a lock and spare tire.  Bob G volunteered to store the trailer at his place.  The club members unanimously approved the purchase of the trailer pending inspection.

Insurance – Barbara Shirey will check with the NMRA insurance carrier to determine if the ground track trailer can be included in the coverage we have on the module trailer.

Green Astroturf – The club unanimously approved the purchase of six strips of Astroturf for use in ground track displays. Size per piece:  12 ft x 6 ft.  Cost per piece:  approx $30.

Book of plans -- Bob intends to prepare a book of suggested layouts for ground track displays, using various configurations of the Astroturf.

Ground track storage boxes – The club unanimously voted to allocate an additional $100 for materials to be used by Bob G for additional ground track storage boxes.

Clamps / rail joiners – Bob G reported that the clamps used to join the tracks in our ground track display need to be removed in order for the tracks to fit inside the track storage boxes he is building.

Vernon’s Open House – The open house originally scheduled for November at Vernon Guess’s house in Broken Arrow has been cancelled.

New Business

Treasurer Kathy Klawitter mentioned there is too much money in the checking account.  The club agreed to the transfer of funds from checking to savings at the Treasurer’s discretion.

Great Train Expo -- Jim Martin asks, if anyone hears anything about the Great Train Expo, please let him know.

Christmas Party – Barbara S and Kathy K agreed to co-chair the Christmas party committee.  A discussion was held whether to continue holding the Christmas party at a restaurant or whether to meet at someone’s house.  If anyone has any suggestions, please contact Barbara or Kathy.

Christmas Party Raffle – In the past, we have set aside $300 to use for raffle items at the Christmas party.  We will further discuss raffle items and amounts at a later date.

Dues -- Bob G suggested changing the dues to a universal $25, instead of $20 for an individual and $30 for a family.  A discussion was held but no final decision was made.

Christmas Parade – It was agreed not to participate in Christmas parades this year.

Children’s Hospital – The Children’s Hospital at St. Francis in Tulsa has asked us to set up a train display on a date of our choosing.  It was agreed to set up a Christmas display at the hospital, rather than participating in the Christmas parades.

Springfield train store -- It was reported that the Springfield train store is closing October 17.  They are currently running a 25% off sale.  Website:  www.gardenrailwaysupplydepot.com

Clinics – Please let the officers know if there are any clinics you would like to attend.

Railmail photos -- Jim needs current photos for the Railmail.  Please email them to him at:  nitram1933@sbcglobal.net

OKC train show – When: December 6 & 7.   Cost: $7 per person.

Show and Tell

Vern showed a boxcar that his youngest son painted with graffiti.  Please contact Vern if you would like something similar.

Program

No program was presented, but we would like to extend a special thank you to Bob and Sheila Buttram for hosting the open house at which this month’s meeting was held.
