Greetings from the President’s Roundhouse

The Prez sends his regrets as he has been, and is still, on the road. So I thought we would at least have a roundhouse photo.

No. 478 belongs to the Durango & Silverton RR.

New Products

In line with last month’s program on battery operations, G-Scale Graphics of Ft Collins CO has several low cost alternatives that might be of interest to some. Their latest (pg 10 Oct. GR Mag.) is a small unit called “Simple Critter”.  It is a manual speed control that mounts on the roof of your unit and allows for manual

speed settings. The control knob can be disguised as a vent or smoke stack and has an easy four wire connection between

battery and motor. Size, 1.0 x 1.1 x 0.5  Cost, $39 + $6 S&H

Also available is their “Basic Critter Control”, also manual, that allows for basic acceleration and stop rates for smooth starts and stops. Speeds can be changed by rotating the toggle switch.

Pressing down on the toggle switch controls direction, starts and stops. Size, 1.9 x 1.45 x 1.25.  This unit sells for $74 + $6 S&H.

The “Enhanced Critter Control” allows for automated station stops with selectable stop times, or reversing for point to point operations. It allows for auto or manual operation. This unit sells for $99 + S&H.  Size 2.35 x 1.55 x 1.0.  Check them out on the web at www.GScaleGraphics.net

Good Golly Miss Molly, Wha’ Happened?

Well a little bit of rain (stock pond overflowed four times), a little too much heat, a few too many field weeds blown in, a few too many days out of town, and a too many days the ol’ bod just couldn’t do anything about it, and there you have it.  Well, there’s always next year for the Boss Creek & Putzenville RR (we hope).

TGRRC Minutes:  August 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Donnie Shirey.  The Minutes were corrected to reflect that Lowell Peters (not Bill Reeder) volunteered to check on possible leads for a ground track trailer.  The Treasurer’s Report was given.

Old Business

Donnie again asked that tour hosts let him know how many tour signs they have so we can try to track down our TGRRC tour signs.

Still no luck in finding a small trailer for the ground track.

Club members were reminded that TGRRC caps and tote bags are available for purchase.  The caps are $10; the tote bags are $7.

A discussion was held regarding Donnie’s suggestion last month to purchase artificial turf  for use in ground track displays at community events, with a final decision to be made at a later date as to how much to spend and how much square footage is needed.

Bixby show – We will be setting up at the Bixby train show in early October.  Set up will be Friday Oct 3.  The train show will be Saturday Oct 4.

At the Bixby show, Joe S and Bob G will determine how many additional boxes we need for ground track storage.

We plan to begin using a donation box at events, but it was suggested that we check with the event sponsor first to be sure there is no objection.

Jim is struggling with the website; Donnie offered suggestions.

New Business

The Buttrams volunteered to host an Open House on Saturday, September 27 from 1:00-5:00, with TGRRC’s monthly meeting to begin at 3:00.  Members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, trains, side dishes, chips, dips, drinks, etc., to go with the hamburgers and hotdogs the Buttrams will be providing.

Club members were reminded that new officers are nominated in September and elected in October.  Our current vice president, Vernon Guess, has asked to be replaced due to family medical issues.  The following club members have agreed to the following offices:  Donnie will continue as President; Bob Gardine will take over as Vice President; Barbara Black, Club Secretary; and Suzanne Honeyman, Club Treasurer.  Formal nominations will be made in September; elections will be held in October.

On Saturday, October 11, a German Fest Fly-in / Drive-in will take place in the Shireys’ new neighborhood near Skiatook.  Directions will be published in the Railmail.  Briefly stated, go north on Hwy 75, turn east onto 186th Street North, travel east for ¾ mile, then turn north.

Springfield, Illinois will host a G-scale train show (Midwest Large Scale Train Show) on October 3-4.

G-Scale Junction has changed ownership.

Joe will check with the Tulsa Zoo’s coordinator of events regarding setting up this year at Zoolightful.

Bob B reported that the tongue wheel has now been attached to the trailer.

Program

Donnie Shirey presented a workshop – converting loco to battery power and construction of a battery car.

Some Trivia

Saw a RR spike for sale in an antique store with a tag that read “Square Nail, $7.50”.  Darn thing sold before I could get a picture.
