Greetings from the President’s Roundhouse

Finally, at last…moved into the new house. Most of the work is done inside the house, but now comes some of the hardest work yet, landscaping. We think we have a spot picked out for the railroad, and will start the cleanup and design phase hopefully this fall.

Don’t forget that the August meeting will have a workshop for converting loco’s over to battery power and r/c operation.  For those of you interested in converting a loco into battery power, or to build up a battery car, bring your items to the August meeting and plan on cutting, stripping, and soldering wire to put it together. Some of the items that are needed to convert a loco to run off of either battery power or track power are:

DPDT switch. (double pole, double throw toggle switch, center off) Can get these from radio shack.

Connector to put between the loco and tender or trailing battery car. Small two prong connector.

BATTERIES… Need the heart of this conversion, the battery pack. There are many types of batteries that can be used. The packs that are used in R/C cars work well. These are available in 7.2 volt and 9.6 volt packs. A good idea is to take two of these packs and wire them in series to double the voltage available to the loco. This will help in both speed and pulling power. Also need the charger to go along with the type of battery chosen.

For the battery power section, will need to also install some type of radio control to actually control the loco when running on battery. Many different ones are available, and it is your preference as to which one you purchase. (Locolinc, Airwire, RCS)

Now is also a good time to install that sound system if you have one….

Also, we are still trying to find all of our Garden Railroad Tour signs. If you have any, please let me know how many so that the club can keep tabs on them.

Remember, we still need items for show and tell for the club meetings. Bring your items to the next meeting for a little “show and brag”.

Until the meeting….Donnie

Minutes:  July 2008

The meeting was called to order by President Donnie Shirey.  The Minutes were approved.  The Treasurer’s Report was given.  We welcomed Bill Thiets, who joined the club at tonight’s meeting.

Old Business

Club members were reminded that TGRRC caps and tote bags are available for purchase.  The caps are $10; the tote bags are $7.

We need to locate our TGRRC tour signs.  Please let Donnie Shirey know how many tour signs you have.

We have not yet found a small trailer for the ground track.  Bill Reeder volunteered to check out a couple possible leads and report back.

We donated $50 to the Freewill Baptist Church in appreciation for the use of the church as our meeting site.  Bob and Sheila thanked the club and indicated the money would be given to the Youth Fund.

Gas reimbursement – A lively discussion was held concerning possible mileage reimbursement for the club member who hauls the trailer to events.  Suggestions were made to place a limit on either the distance traveled or the total reimbursement.  Doug Boone suggested the club pre-approve each event.  The motion was made and seconded that the club allocate, on a per-event basis, appropriate funds, including mileage reimbursement, to attend that event.  The club members voted and approved the motion.

New Business

Vernon Guess is planning an Open House for either Saturday, November 8 or Saturday, November 15.  He plans to grill hamburgers and hot dogs.  Club members are invited to bring trains to run and to bring side dishes to help complete the meal.

Donnie suggested purchasing artificial turf to place under the ground track at events.  Mike Klawitter volunteered to obtain prices and to report back. Jim Martin volunteered to be TGRRC’s new webmaster. Bob Gardine encouraged fund raisers to avoid drawing down the club’s funds.  He suggested fund raisers such as the annual tour, raffles at every meeting, and a donation box at community events.  Harry indicated his motorcycle group holds a 50/50 raffle where the club keeps 50% of the donations and the winner takes the other 50%. Vernon Guess encouraged using a donation box at community events for possible contributions from the community.  He suggested building a wooden box with plexiglass front or using something as simple as a pickle jar.  He encouraged the club to put a sign on the donation box indicating what the funds would be used for. Vernon will get additional information on the Bixby show to be held in October, including how much space might be available for the club to use for a ground track layout.

Program: (1) Auction – Jim auctioned the remainder of Skip’s G-scale collection.  Proceeds totaled over $400.

(2) Bob Gardine gave a demonstration on building and lighting techniques.

Parting Glance

This is a larger than life size black &  white painting on the side of a building in downtown Klamath Falls, Oregon.  It depicts their 1st train into town around the turn of the last century. But one of “us” is in it.  Who do you think it is?

Our Next Stop… 6:45pm, Thursday, August 28th  at the Freewill Baptist Church, 1190 N. Mingo, Tulsa OK  “All Aboard”!
